Cardiothoracic Surgery
The implementation of RMH's Cardiothoracic Surgery program has expanded the scope of coronary procedure options to include coronary artery bypass, heart valve replacement, and aortic surgery. Your cardiologist, in consultation with our cardiothoracic surgeons, will determine if you are a candidate for cardiac surgery based on:
- Your specific anatomy.
- The location and severity of blockages.
- The need for valve repair or replacement based on degree of malfunction.
The cardiothoracic team also provides all non-heart-related surgeries within the thoracic (chest) cavity. This includes surgery performed on the lungs, esophagus, diaphragm and chest wall.
Our cardiothoracic surgery team is led by medical director Steven W. Marra, MD. He is supported by the surgeons of Cardiac & Thoracic Surgical Associates, Ltd. (CTSA), a cardiothoracic group practice in Richmond, Va. When Dr. Marra is out of town or under the weather, one of the CTSA surgeons stay in Harrisonburg to provide coverage. RMH and the Harrisonburg community are never without a cardiothoracic surgeon.
What His Peers are Saying
“I have been impressed with both the skill and approachability of Dr. Marra. I have seen all kinds of physicians in my 26 years at RMH. The most important things that I look for are core values in a physician, in rank order, the patient first and ego second, clinical skills, accommodation to colleagues beyond the comfort zone, and loyalty to the institution. I think Steve Marra is exemplary in all these characteristics. He has been more than open with me and easily approachable. He is one of the best things that has happened to this institution.” -Dr. William Cale, Pulmonary Medicine
